What to Expect at Your First Boxing Class in Brisbane
Starting boxing can feel exciting and a little intimidating. The good news is that a beginner boxing class should introduce the sport safely, clearly and at a pace you can manage.
At The Boxing Shop in Salisbury, Brisbane, beginners can learn real boxing technique without needing to spar or get hit. Here is what you can expect when you attend your first class.
You do not need to be fit before starting
Many people delay joining a boxing gym because they think they must get fit first. A beginner class is designed to help you build fitness gradually. Your coach can adjust exercises to suit your current ability, experience and confidence.
Your coach will teach the basic stance
A good boxing stance gives you balance, helps you move efficiently and puts you in a safe position to punch and defend. Beginners normally learn where to place their feet, how to hold their hands and how to keep a relaxed but stable posture.
You will learn simple footwork
Boxing is not only about punching. Footwork helps you control distance, maintain balance and move into the right position. Your first class may include simple forward, backward and sideways movements before punches are added.
You will practise basic punches
Most beginners start with straight punches such as the jab and cross. Your coach will explain how to rotate correctly, protect your hands and return to your boxing stance after every punch.
Depending on the class, you may practise in the air, on focus pads or on a punch bag.
There is usually no sparring
Beginner-friendly boxing does not mean you must fight another person. At The Boxing Shop, beginners can learn skills, improve fitness and train on pads and bags without contact. Sparring is a separate activity for suitable athletes who have the required experience, equipment and coach approval.
What should you bring?
- Comfortable training clothes
- Closed training shoes
- A water bottle
- A small towel
- Boxing gloves and hand wraps if you already own them
If you do not have boxing equipment yet, ask the coach what size and style you need before buying. You can also read our beginner boxing-glove guide.
Will the class be difficult?
Boxing training can be challenging, but your first session is about learning rather than proving yourself. Listen to your coach, work at a sensible pace and ask questions if you are unsure.
