THE STORY
From a Backyard Shed to 50 Schools
In 2011, Gareth Williams walked into a South East Queensland school with a set of focus mitts and an idea: boxing could reach the students that traditional programs couldn't. The kids who were disengaged, suspended, or on the edge of dropping out entirely.
That first session changed everything. Within weeks, teachers reported improved behaviour, better attendance, and students who were asking — for the first time — when they could come back.
Today, Boxing Beyond Barriers operates across more than 50 schools, youth justice centres, and community partnerships throughout South East Queensland. The program has supported over 5,000 young people — and it's still growing.
PROGRAM VALUES
Four Pillars of the Program
-
DISCIPLINE
Every session is structured. Students learn to follow instructions, respect timing, and commit to a process.
-
RESILIENCE
Boxing teaches young people to get back up. The program builds mental toughness through physical challenge.
-
RESPECT
For the coach, for the equipment, for themselves. Mutual respect is a non-negotiable in every session.
-
SELF-BELIEF
Many students arrive doubting themselves. They leave understanding what they're capable of when they commit.
HOW IT WORKS
Program Structure
Boxing Beyond Barriers is delivered directly into schools and community organisations. Gareth and his coaching team bring the equipment, the structure, and the mentorship.
-
SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
Schools or community orgs contact Gareth to discuss student needs, session frequency, and program goals. Every engagement is tailored.
-
IN-SCHOOL DELIVERY
Sessions run on-site at the school or partner facility. Students train in groups of 10–15 with full equipment provided. No cost to families.
-
ONGOING MENTORSHIP
The program isn't just 6 weeks and done. Gareth builds long-term relationships with students, checking in, supporting transitions, and celebrating progress.
